Mono printing continuation. Rather than just using paper, ink and drawing over the surface, I decided to utilise the etching aspect of monoprint. A spare perspex panel became my printing medium and a compass end became my ‘drawing’ implement.

This perspex panel was scored into, and the surface applied with oil based washable ink. Purposely, I did not want a direct print from a roller, the effect I wanted to emulate was full of texture and a kinetic/worked into energy. This technique was made possible by rubbing the ink over the perspex surface and loading it with ink. Newspaper was rubbed over the surface, removing excess ink for the distressed look I was after. I had borrowed a small and portable printing press from one of my friends, which is how I was able to create such fresh and sharp prints.



Two images were produced, one with brown and one with blue ink.


It takes years for an artist to nurture their own individual style. That feeling of understanding who I am, who I want to be, is rather a special journey.

Not wanting to waste any of the ink on the surface/within the grooves, I continued to print. The image (left) was created using the remaining ink from the previous press. The last (right) print was created by removing all ink from the surface, but leaving the ink collect within the grooves. More pressure was added from the printing press, colour was only evident from the shells on the perspex, hence only a white background.

What went well?

Clear and descriptive linear language. Perspex easy to clean. Material choice important for future projects.

Monoprint evokes a wonderful painterly quality to the final image. The fact that I have utilised a perspex printing tool means that I can reproduce this image again and again, this is not the same for a direct monoprint; can only be used once, hence the term monoprint.

Could I place material over parts of the print, and then print onto fabric/paper? What would this process record? Collage background with stitch? Would the stitch change with print over the top? Deconstructing stitch and rearranging image to form abstract weave?
